Solving Large-Scale Energy System Models
By Frederik Fiand, GAMS Software GmbH
Tuesday, September 25, 9:10 am - 9:50 am
Many Energy System Models (ESMs) result in large-scale Linear Programs (LPs) that are computationally intractable for state-of-the-art LP Solvers. BEAM-ME is a project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) that addresses the need for efficient solution strategies for ESMs. This involves changes to the formulation of the ESMs, parameter tuning to improve the performance of general purpose LP solvers but also the development of new solution algorithms that focus on parallelization to utilize the power of High-Performance Computers (HPC). Many ESMs have a block structure that is not well exploited by general purpose LP solvers but that makes the model in general suitable for structure exploiting parallel algorithms. We give examples of such algorithms and discuss how extensions to the GAMS language, which forms the interface between the modeler and the solution algorithm, increase its HPC capabilities.
