Stephen has a PhD in Mathematics from the Univeristy of New South Wales, Australia. His PhD focused on the application of optimisation techniques to solve robust planning and recovery problem in the airline industry. Following his PhD, Stephen worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Zuse Institute Berlin, where he contributed to the development of the constraint integer programming solver SCIP. In 2017, Stephen was awarded an EPSRC fellowship to combine his experience with decomposition techniques and solver development to create a general Benders decomposition framework in SCIP. He continued his research in operations research and decomposition techniques at the Lancaster University (2017-2019) and the University of Exeter (2019-2022). In 2022, Stephen made the move from academia to industry as a senior research engineer at Quantagonia. Stephen joined GAMS in 2024 to support optimisation projects and the newly formed solver development team.
